Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs during the luteal phase, which is 5-11 days before a women’s menstrual period begins.  The symptoms of PMS usually subside with the onset of menstruation or a few days after. The exact cause of PMS symptoms is unknown, but possible factors include hormone imbalances, fluctuations in brain chemicals (e.g., serotonin) and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Symptoms of Premenstrual syndrome include:
  • Acne flare up
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Weight gain (from fluid retention)
  • Constipation of diarrhea
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Depressed mood
  • Anxiety
  • Appetite changes and cravings
  • Poor concentration

Naturopathic treatment for Premenstrual Syndrome

In developing a treatment plan for PMS, the patient's overall health is considered and the treatment individualized. Aggravating factors will be addressed through diet and lifestyle changes. Specific supplements and botanicals may also be used to re-balance the hormonal system.

Acupuncture has been shown to effectively reduce both the physical and emotional symptoms of PMS through hormone regulation and pain management.

If you are experiencing symptoms of PMS, contact Dr. Lesley to find out how Naturopathic Medicine can benefit you.
